Nikon KeyMission 360 Preview

We preview the new Nikon action camera, the KeyMission and ponder how it will affect adventure media.

Nikon just announced their new entries into the action camera category.  The KeyMission 360, KeyMission 170 and KeyMission 80.  We haven't yet tested one but based on using a 360 degree action camera last winter we are going to make a few predictions.

First off though, what are they?   In short they are similar to other action type cameras but with some notable upgrades that will give adventure filmmakers an option to the ever popular GoPro.

Nikon's promo video will tell you more than I ever could so check it out.

Nikon KeyMission 360 Photo

Today, Nikon Canada announced the new line of KeyMission action cameras that encourages users to discover, capture and share their personal missions from an entirely new perspective. Rooted in Nikon’s legendary excellence in imaging innovation, this new camera lineup offers users a hands-free way to push the limits and document their adventures through high-quality immersive video that puts the viewer in the middle of the action.

The rugged KeyMission 360 is the first Nikon camera capable of Full 360° video in 4K UHD, providing users a unique way to create engaging content like never before. Also introduced today is the new Nikon KeyMission 170, an adventure-ready camera capable of amazing stills and 4K UHD video at a wide-angle point of view, as well as Nikon’s KeyMission 80, a compact and lightweight camera for capturing the spontaneous moments of everyday life.

Nikon’s KeyMission line is based on the belief that life is about discovering new people, new places, new knowledge and new purpose – that individuals are on a journey to find the personal missions that bring out the best versions of themselves. The world is a better place when we experience and share our adventures, our stories and our loves; the KeyMission line provides a new way of seeing and sharing these missions with the world.

So, here are my predictions.

1. The KeyMission 360 and KeyMission 170 will be game changers in outdoor adventure media.

Up until now GoPro has ruled the roost for adventure filmmaking.  The "gopro" perspective is so prevalent in action films that few of us even notice the distorted point of view anymore.  I believe it won't be a question of whether the Nikon action cameras offer a better option than GoPro but that they are durable, small and offer an extreme wide angle perspective that will be visually different than the GoPro.

2. More dorky cameras on helmets than ever before!

I admit it.  I am a bit of a square and almost nothing brings back the memories of being a dork in grade school quicker than putting an action camera on my head.  A lot of people have switched to body mounting their GoPro's but with a 360 degree camera it will most often end up on top of helmets.

3. Amazing footage

The ability to put the KeyMission on a ski pole, helmet, front of a kayak, end of a ski, etc and then choose the point of view after, or let the viewer choose their own view will result in amazing footage.

4. Some people are going to barf.

The 360 degree perspective will also provide endless amounts of nauseating footage that will leave audiences reaching for their barf bags.
